મહાભારતના દ્રોણપર્વમાં એક કથા છે. પ્રાચીન કાળમાં સંજય નામના એક નરેશ હતા. તેમને કોઈ પુત્ર ન હતો, માત્ર એક પુત્રી હતી. પુત્રપ્રાપ્તિની ઇચ્છાથી તેમણે બ્રાહ્મણોની સેવા લેવાની શરૂઆત કરી. રાજાના દાન અને સન્માનથી સંતુષ્ટ થઈને બ્રાહ્મણોએ દેવર્ષિ નારદ સમક્ષ રાજાને પુત્ર થવાની પ્રાર્થના કરી. તે દિવસોમાં દેવર્ષિ રાજા સંજયના જ અતિથિ હતા. બ્રાહ્મણોની પ્રાર્થનાથી પ્રભાવિત થઈને દેવર્ષિએ રાજાને પૂછ્યું કે હે રાજા, તમે કેવો પુત્ર ઇચ્છો છો? હવે રાજાના મનમાં લોભ જન્મ્યો. તેમણે કહ્યું કે એવા પુત્રનું વરદાન આપો જે સુંદર, તંદુરસ્ત અને ગુણવાન હોય તથા તેનાં મળ-મૂત્ર, થૂંક-કફ વગેરે સુવર્ણમય હોય.
