Social care rarely makes the news and has been overlooked for decades. It’s great to see it receiving serious attention from Andy Burnham so early in his time as Prime Minister. For too long, successive Governments have recognised the problems facing social care without having the political courage to properly address them. 

Eleven-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan has become Britain’s youngest-ever women’s chess champion after defeating her opponent in a play-off at the University of Warwick.

Chess grandmaster Daniel Gormally hailed her victory as “unreal”, highlighting the remarkable rise of a player who took up chess just six years ago. Bodhana has already defeated several top male players and is being described as one of Britain’s greatest chess prodigies.

Despite the growing expectations, Bodhana remains focused on achieving more. “I’m happy about the title but I want to keep going for more in the future,” she said.

Britain is bracing for another blast of extreme heat, with the Met Office warning that a sixth heatwave could sweep across the country as early as September.

Indian High Commission marks India’s 80th Independence Day with Tiranga Relay in London

The High Commission of India in London celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day on Saturday 15 August with the ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ global relay of the Tricolour and a flag-hoisting ceremony at India House. 

Hundreds of people from the community attended the morning event, which included renditions of the Indian National Anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, and ‘Vande Mataram’. A music and dance performance themed around India’s freedom struggle was also staged as part of the celebrations.
