પ્રજાસત્તાક પર્વ પહેલાં રાષ્ટ્રપતિ પ્રણવ મુખરજીએ ૨૦૧૭ના વર્ષ માટે પદ્મ પુરસ્કારો મેળવનારા મહાનુભાવોના નામ ૨૫મી જાન્યુઆરીએ જાહેર કર્યાં હતાં. સાત મહાનુભાવોને પદ્મવિભૂષણ, સાતને પદ્મભૂષણ અને ૭૫ને પદ્મશ્રી આપવાની જાહેરાત થઈ હતી. ગુજરાતના સાત મહાનુભાવોને વિવિધ ક્ષેત્રમાં નોંધપાત્ર પ્રદાન બદલ પદ્મ પુરસ્કારો એનાયત થશે.

કાશ્મીરમાં હિમસ્ખલનની વધુ બે મોટી ઘટના સામે આવી છે. જેમાં સૈન્યના મેજર સહિત છ લોકોના બરફની શિલાઓમાં દટાઇ જવાથી મોત નિપજ્યાં છે. પહેલી ઘટના કાશ્મીરના સોનમર્ગમાં આવેલા સૈન્ય કેમ્પમાં બની હતી. સૈન્યના આ કેમ્પ પર એક મોટી હિમશીલા ખાબકી હતી. કેમ્પમાં સૈન્યના મેજર અમિત સાગર પણ હતા, જેઓનું દટાઇ જવાથી મોત નિપજ્યું છે. દરમિયાન સૈન્યના જવાનો દ્વારા મોટાપાયે રેસ્ક્યુ ઓપરેશન હાથ ધરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. એમાં એક જવાનનું દટાઇ જવાથી બાદમાં મોત નિપજ્યું હતું.

શીખોનાં પાંચ ધાર્મિક ચિહનો રાખીને અમેરિકી લશ્કરમાં સેવા આપવાની મંજૂરી મળી ગઈ છે. પગલાંના થોડા દિવસ પહેલાં લશ્કરે નવો નિયમ લાગુ પાડ્યો હતો. તેમાં પાઘડી કે હિજાબ પહેરનારા કે દાઢી રાખનારા જવાનોને લશ્કરમાં કામ કરવાની પરવાનગી આપવામાં આવી હતી. સંરક્ષણ મંત્રાલયે ૧૯૮૧માં આસ્થા દર્શાવતાં પ્રતીકો ઉપર પ્રતિબંધ મૂક્યો હતો.
