Family remembers RAF son on Remembrance Day

Father Kishor Chauhan, explained how remembrance day was a time of recent grief for him and his family: “We’re just going to use the day to remember our son” he said. His 29 year-old boy Flight Lieutenant Rakesh Chauhan was an intelligence officer in the RAF who died in April of this year when the Lynx helicopter in which he was being transported came down in Afghanistan.

Armed Forces Hindu network launched at Diwali celebration

A celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights, provided the ideal opportunity to launch the Armed Forces Hindu Network. The festival is the highlight of the Hindu religious calendar, and marks the New Year. Serving personnel, Lord Astor and other invited guests gathered in MOD’s Whitehall headquarters for the Armed Forces Diwali Celebration on Wednesday.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers Exclusive: Mumbai’s undercity comes to London

Last week, Asian Voice had the pleasure of previewing the National Theatre’s production of Behind the Beautiful Forevers. Based on the National Book Award-winning novel by Katherine Boo, the play presents globalisation from the perspective of the Mumbai slum dweller, particularly, as director Rufus Norris expressed, with the thinking that “these people have every strand of complexity that” we possess as westerners. Indeed, the assortment of dynamic characters that drives the story forwards originates from Boo’s three years of intimate research in the poverty-stricken area of Annawadi, behind Mumbai airport. In this way, Behind the Beautiful Forevers does not so much tell of economic inequality as actually show it.
