The pound weakened last week as details of the Bank of England’s first unanimous decision on monetary policy since July dampened the outlook for higher interest rates that would support the currency. Sterling fell against 13 of its 16 major peers after policy makers Martin Weale and Ian McCafferty dropped their call for an interest-rate increase as plunging oil prices raised the risk that slow inflation would become entrenched. If interest rates are raised now it would add to deflationary pressures as people would have less money to spend on goods and services.

A demonstration against the closure of the Upton Centre took place on Saturday 24th January outside the Eastham Town Hall. Approximately 300-400 people, mainly Hindus, participated in this demonstration to reopen the centre which had been closed on Friday 19 December after specialist engineers advised that the boilers were no longer compliant and the heating system could not be used.

A pizza parlour in Birmingham was forced to temporarily close after health inspectors discovered it was infested with cockroaches. Pizza Pan in Aldridge Road, Perry Barr, was ordered to shut for three days because of the risk to human health.

Barnet Council is once again encouraging residents to sign up to the Big London Energy Switch and save money on their energy bills. Now in its third year, the Big London Energy Switch is an initiative supported by local authorities across the capital, which allows residents to group together to leverage lower tariffs from energy companies.

Mr Salim Ahmed, from Ilford IG1 who rented a potentially dangerous property to tenants in Ilford has been fined a total of £7,467.20. It is the latest in a number of successful prosecutions taken by the Council against irresponsible landlords.

Schools in England are being asked to put pupils through extra mock maths exams after concerns were raised over the new maths GCSE. In December, two examination boards accused a rival of offering sample maths papers that are too easy. Schools are due to start teaching the reformed maths GCSE from September, with the first exams to be sat in 2017.
