Renowned mountaineer and former British Army Nirmal Purja and nine other climbers have been confirmed dead after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan and Purja's expedition company.

The avalanche hit the 10-member expedition during their ascent. Rescue teams have recovered some bodies, while search operations for the remaining victims continue despite difficult weather conditions.

The Nepal-born climber, who served with the Gurkhas and the UK's Special Boat Service, gained global recognition in 2019 after photographing long queues of climbers near the summit of Mount Everest, sparking debate over overcrowding and the commercialisation of high-altitude expeditions. During that climb, he helped manage the dangerous bottleneck to improve climber safety.

As the Glasgow Commonwealth Games concluded, India officially began the countdown to the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad with a vibrant handover ceremony celebrating the country's culture, heritage and modern identity through music, dance and storytelling.

During the closing ceremony at the OVO Hydro, Glasgow formally passed the Commonwealth Games baton to India. Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, representing King Charles III, declared the Games closed and invited athletes from across the Commonwealth to gather in Ahmedabad in four years for the centenary edition of the Games.

India's gold medallist boxer Jaismine Lamboria carried the national flag at the closing ceremony. The formal handover saw the Commonwealth Games flag passed through a series of dignitaries, including Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, officially transferring hosting rights from Scotland to India.

Couples in England and Wales will be able to legally marry at locations such as their homes, pubs and cruise ships under the biggest overhaul of wedding laws in nearly 200 years.

The reforms aim to replace outdated venue rules, giving couples more flexibility and making weddings more accessible.
Under the proposals, couples could legally marry in locations such as castles, beaches and cruise ships, provided the ceremony is conducted by an approved officiant. However, ceremonies considered to trivialise marriage, such as skydiving weddings, would not be allowed under a proposed "dignity framework." The changes would also ease restrictions on religious content and allow non-religious groups to conduct legal weddings.
